How much snow does Medina get in a typical winter?
Medina sits between the two NOAA snowfall stations used for the area. Akron-Canton Airport, to the southeast, averages 47.2 inches of snow a season under the 1991 to 2020 normals, and Cleveland Hopkins, to the north, averages 63.8 inches.
January is the snowiest month at both stations, followed by February and December. That is when plow contracts earn their keep, and when calling around for a plow on the morning of a storm is hardest.

Is Medina in the snowbelt?
Northern Medina County is part of Northeast Ohio's secondary snowbelt, according to News 5 and Cleveland 19 forecasters. Lake-effect snow reaches it mainly when winds blow straight from the north off Lake Erie.
The Medina County Engineer also notes that areas north of State Route 18 generally get more snow than areas south of it, and that flat, open ground is prone to blowing snow drifting back onto pavement. Properties toward Brunswick, Hinckley and Valley City may need more pushes than those toward Seville or Lodi.
Who plows the roads, and what is left to property owners?
Public roads are split between several crews. Private lots, driveways and walks are the owner's job.
| Road or area | Who clears it |
|---|---|
| City of Medina streets | City Street Department, on six routes; every city street is plowed and salted |
| County roads | Medina County Highway Department, under the County Engineer |
| State routes and interstates outside city limits (I-71, and US 42, SR 3, SR 18 and SR 57 beyond the city) | ODOT |
| Township roads | Each township's road department and trustees |
| Parking lots, private drives, private subdivision roads, walks | The property owner, association or tenant |
Inside the city, the Street Department also clears the state routes, which get extra attention because they carry more traffic. The city's own crews work snow and ice from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are called out by the police after hours. Business lots that must open early usually rely on a private contractor rather than waiting on public plows.

Do Medina property owners have to clear their sidewalks?
City of Medina ordinance requires the owners and occupiers of lots next to a sidewalk to keep it free from snow, and each day a violation continues counts as a separate offense. Ohio has no statewide sidewalk shoveling law, so each city and village sets its own rule.
Storefronts around Medina Square and businesses along Court Street and Broadway Street can add sidewalk snow removal to their plowing so the public walk is covered too.
How does a snow removal request work?
- Send the form with your address, the areas to clear and the service you need.
- Your request goes to a local snow removal contractor who serves your area.
- The contractor contacts you to confirm details and give you a price.
- You agree terms directly with the contractor, per push, per event or for the season.
Sending a request costs nothing and does not commit you to anything. Medina Snow Removal is a referral service; the contractor who contacts you does the work.
What should you have ready before asking for a quote?
- The property address, or several addresses for a multi-site business
- What needs clearing: lot, drive lanes, private road, driveway, walks, steps, ramps
- The snow depth that should trigger a visit and the time the property must be open
- Whether salt or ice melt should be applied, and on which areas
- Anything a plow could damage: curbs, islands, pavers, low walls, mailboxes
The city advises setting mailboxes behind the back of the curb, and does not replace a mailbox that was not installed properly and was not actually hit by a city plow.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does snow removal cost in Medina, OH?
- Prices depend on the size of the area, the trigger depth, how quickly it must be clear, whether salt is included and whether you pay per push or for the season. A driveway and a retail lot are priced very differently. Send the address through the quote form and the contractor gives you a real number.
- Who plows my street in Medina?
- City streets are plowed and salted by the City of Medina Street Department. County roads are handled by the Medina County Highway Department, township roads by the township, and state routes outside the city by ODOT; inside the city, the Street Department plows every street, including the state routes. Private drives, lots and walks are up to the owner.
- When should I sign up for snow plowing?
- Before the first measurable snow, ideally in October or November. Contractors build their routes before winter, and properties already on a route get cleared first. Read how seasonal snow contracts work, then send a request.
- Can I request snow removal outside the city of Medina?
- Requests are welcome from across Medina County and the edge of the surrounding counties, including Brunswick, Wadsworth, Medina Township and Montville Township. See the full service area list.
- Is Medina Snow Removal the company that plows?
- Medina Snow Removal is a referral service. It passes your request to a local snow removal contractor, who contacts you, quotes and does the work. Sending a request is free.
- Who is liable if someone slips on my lot?
- Ohio courts have held that owners generally have no common-law duty to remove natural accumulations of snow and ice, but local ordinances, contracts and careless snow removal can change that. Ask your attorney or insurer about your property, and put the snow and salt duties in writing with your contractor.
